Stain or paint Sleigh bed. Prime or just sand? What about metal inserts?

I have a kind of large wooden sleigh bed like this: http://danekworld.com/spencer/sca/red_maple_inn/images/duck_room_sleigh_bed.jpg To paint the dark brown or black high gloss. Perhaps even hairspray. Should I sand? Do I need to prepare before the paint? And need a separate coat of polyurethane? What about the metal, I use a different primer to the metal or roughen up with the sander as well or can I paint next? Any advice for working to make this work? You may leave the bare metal and just record it off. Is the spot sanding THEN? How the stain to adhere? The gravel bed is not already and it is unfinished. He was a second-hand, hand-me-down from a friend, and has an end of school already but it is solid wood and not metal so I think an arena should do very well.

Unless the bed comes already sanded, which is rare if it is unfinished wood, you need to sand it with a medium grit then a fine grit first. Then prime it. Don’t worry about using a white primer if that is all you can get. The dark brown or black should cover with two coats. If you want the high gloss, poly u will do it for you, but be sure to use very even strokes and work from side to side, trying to keep the brush in contact with the wood at all times. That should keep it smooth for both paint and poly.
I would leave the metal alone for a while to see how you like it. you can always go back and paint over that at a later time, when the original poly u is so dry it will take masking without picking any of it off the finish.
You can buy combination high gloss paint.varnish or paint/poly but i would avoid that to make sure you get good *********** of the wood grain with your paint first.
When the paint is dry, you might try buffing it with a wool cloth, the same after the poly is dry. This might help get the sheen you want. Nice looking bed. Hope it works well for you.
